A few words about Wiżajny ...
Wiżajny was a center of Polish colonization of Merecki Forest in late sixteenth century. For the first time Wiżajny was mentioned in the documents of puńska parish in 1606. Confirmation of municipal rights was in 1693. Then the county office was created. The first of the heads were Radzivills. Wiżajny name of the village probably was taken from the name of the lake..During the Swedish wars Wiżajny was destroyed. It was rebuilt, and the chief glory of its time survived in the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. In 1800 the population numbered 685, and at the end of the nineteenth century around 2300. Unfortunately, in 1870, Wiżajny lost its civic rights. In the interwar period it was a headquarters of Border Protection Corps. Wiżajny preserved spatial layout of urban development around the old market - known as the Lower Market. In the first half of the nineteenth century a classical mansion was kept. Higher - because on the hill - was Upper Market, where between 1823-1825 neoclassical brick church of St. Teresa of Avila was built. Today Wiżajny is a communal village, situated between Wistuć and Wiżajny lake. In Poland it is considered as a cold pole. Snow remaines until March, which gives a great ski conditions.
